While scrolling through Instagram I immediately stopped on this ad.
The image of this skirt, the sleeves, the color instantly got me out of bed and off to sketching. I wanted this look and I wanted it right away. Has that ever happened to you? Have you ever seen a look or pinned something and then wanted to instantly make it? Well it did that day and I couldn’t get it out of my mind.
Off to my sewing studio I went. I started going through patterns that I felt would bring this look to life. I had a few options in mind and then I finally settled on the McCall’s #M8034 for the sleeve, McCalls #M7654 for the bodice and Simplicity #S9375 for the skirt. It was a perfect pairing.
When I went off to JoAnn Fabrics and found the perfect linen blend to match the color. It was meant to be. JoAnn’s has an array of linen fabrics and linen blends that work for any look. I actually picked up a few different colors for upcoming looks.
I got home and quickly took out my MyDailyThreadMe / Nina Ramel Planner book and sketched and added my info and started the plan. I cut the patterns I cut the fabric and I was ready to go. I had everything.
I started on the skirt, which came together quickly. I sew slow(very slow) and this was an easy sew. However, after my excitement of making the skirt, I realized as I was putting it together it was not a true wrap skirt as in the picture. I debated if I wanted to make it a full wrap skirt or cut into the skirt a bit at an angle to give the look I wanted. I even polled some of you on IG to help me.
I ended up cutting it the inside skirt piece a bit more on a diagonal to get the look that I was going for.
The bodice was even trickier to manage. Since I was hacking it and taking the top portion of the bodice from a dress, I needed to use a separating zipper. I couldn’t find any that I wanted. I couldn’t believe that I didn’t realize it until after I was about to add an invisible zipper. I thought about the sleeves and how the I liked the tie feature at the wrist and decided that I would add grommets to the back and tie the look together.
You see when you are inspired you don’t just take the look and make it as is. You use it to infuse to your own style and aesthetic. Here is the finished look! Let me know what you think. Did I nail it?
